O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. Judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol immediately.
